Research

Research Interests:

  • Suicide risk in the offender populations of European countries
  • Risks of child homicide and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in familes with parental mental illness
  • Explanations for divergent trends in national suicide rates between Scotland and England
  • Suicide risk in people with major physical illnesses and medically unexplained physical symptoms

Current Grant Funding:

Suicide risk and the Danish criminal justice system: a nested case-control study. American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)

Why does Scotland have a higher suicide rate than England? An area-level investigation of social, health status & healthcare factors? Scottish Government Chief Scientist Office (CSO)

Methodological Knowledge

Observational studies in psychiatric epidemiology. In particular, large cohort and nested case-control studies using population-based data from the UK and Scandinavia.
