Role
I am a HEFCE funded clinical senior lecturer based at the University of Manchester and at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (50:50 split).
The academic part of my current post comprises of five sessions per week as a Senior Lecturer based at the University Hospital of South Manchester. I am part of the Respiratory Group in the School of Translational Medicicne. My main research interest is the role of environmental factors, in particular diet and obesity, in the development of asthma and allergic sensitisation. In addition I have an interest in treatment options for asthma. I have an active role in the Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria Medicines for Children's Network (MCRN) and I am PI for 4 respiratory studies. I am a member of the Respiratory and Cystic Fibrosis MCRN Clinical studies group. I am Greater Manchester lead for the Paediatric Non-medicines Research (PNMR) network and am PI for several studies running through this.
The clinical part of my current post comprises of 5 sessions a week as a Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. As part of a 4WTE consultant team we offer a secondary and tertiary paediatric respiratory service for the North West of England. This includes the investigation and management of children with conditions such as asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic lung disease of prematurity, tuberculosis and interstitial lung disease. In addition we run the Cystic Fibrosis service for Greater Manchester and offer a shared-care service for all children with Cystic Fibrosis in the North West Region by means of peripatetic clinics.

Research
I entered full time research for a two year period in September 1999 at the University of Manchester , under the supervision of Professors Woodcock and Custovic. Working as part of the Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study (MAAS) team I completed my MD Thesis entitled “Environmental Allergens and Childhood Asthma” (awarded December 2002). After completing my clinical training and gaining my CCST in Respiratory Paediatric Medicine, I returned to work with the same research team as a Senior Clinical Research Fellow on a part time basis (5 sessions).
As an independent investigator I obtained competitive grant funding from independent sources (GSK Respiratory Research Award) to pursue my research interest in the dietary risk factors for the development of asthma and allergic sensitisation. My project is embedded within the Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study (population-based birth cohort of >1000 children recruited between 1995 and 1997). I currently lead the dietary/obesity aspect of the study and supervise 2 PhD students (year 2 and 3). The cohort is supported by the Asthma UK (Grants 301, 362 and 01/012).
Over the next few years I will continue to build on my expertise in diet and obesity by focusing on:
-
Effect of specific dietary nutrients on asthma and allergic disease including gene by environment interaction
1. Intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, n3:n6), dietary antioxidants (vitamin A, C and E), antioxidant cofactors (selenium, copper and zinc)
2. Gene-environment interactions (e.g. Leukotiene pathway and intake of n3 PUFA; Vitamin D intake and genes associated with vitamin D metabolism and signalling; Vitamin E intake and genes associated with cytokine secretion, T-cell cycle related proteins and metalloproteinase). -
Effect of obesity on childhood/adolescent asthma and allergic disease
In collaboration with Dr Iain Buchan(Senior Lecturer in Public Health Informatics, University of Manchester) we will use prospective data on weights and heights to investigate the effect of growth and obesity on asthma (severity and new onset disease) -
Specific diet based allergies
Peanut - including determination of allergy or sensitisation using component resolved diagnostics.

Biography
I qualified from Edinburgh University in 1990. I started training as a paediatrician in 1993 and worked/trained as a specialist registrar in paediatrics in the Mersey deanery, specialising in respiratory paediatrics. I took time out from 1999 to 2001 to carry out research and was awarded my MD (Environmental allergens and childhood asthma) in 2002. I completed my training in 2003 and have been a consultant in paediatric respiratory medicine at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital since then. I was awarded a HEFCE clinical senior lectureship in August 2007 have been working a 50:50 clinical:research split between the University of Manchester and Royal manchester Children's Hospital, since then.
