Role
Iain Buchan is a Clinical Professor in Public Health Informatics, Director of the Northwest Institute for Bio-Health Informatics, Chief Scientific Officer of North West e-Health, and an Honorary Consultant in English Public Health Service. He also has advisory roles in Health Informatics and Public Health with UK, EU and global research and policy organisations, and industry.
Memberships of Committees and Professional Bodies
Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health
Level III Member of the Council for Health Informatics Professions
Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society
Research
Iain’s research interests centre on building usefully-complex models of health and connecting patients and health professionals with health data in more informative ways. There are three phases to this work: 1) building the infrastructure to achieve large scale (Clinical) Epidemiology from routine care-records; 2) extending the epidemiological methodology for complex modelling, including experimentation with machine learning approaches; and 3) studying algorithms & information systems as healthcare interventions, developing a patient/citizen centred experimental environment that builds on (1). Phase (1) is being realised through the “NHS e-Lab” infrastructure that aims to become self-sustaining by 2012 through www.nweh.org.uk. Phase (2) is starting to deliver interesting results such as new insights into childhood asthma using unconventional statistical methods from the machine learning field. In order to train future researchers to work across disciplines in this way he has set up a doctoral training programme, bringing together statistical & mathematical, biomedical, social; economic and computational thinking. Iain’s current focus is on the methodological challenges of building dynamic models of healthcare systems, and on generating evidence to guide the engineering of mobile and social computing technologies as healthcare interventions, particularly in preventive and self care.

Biography
Iain's background is in Medicine, and alongside medical training he worked extensively in Statistics and Informatics. During undergraduate studies in Medicine and Pharmacology in the late 1980s he wrote statistical software for clinical researchers - this grew into www.statsdirect.com, which now has around 15,000 users world-wide. As a junior doctor, he developed software to support care pathways between primary and secondary care and studied clinical knowledge management and decision support problems. In the mid-90s he moved from clinical and research roles in Liverpool to a combination of research and specialist medical training roles in Cambridge, where he continued Health Informatics research, completed a doctoral thesis on computational statistics and completed specialist training in Public Health. In 2003 he returned to England’s Northwest Region to found a new area of research in Public Health Informatics at the University of Manchester. To date at Manchester he has generated around £25M of research activity and he now leads an interdisciplinary institute of around 45 people across the four Faculties of the University, based mainly in Community Based Medicine and Computer Science. The group produces not only scientific papers but also software (see www.youtube.com/user/NIBHI1) to support research and provide the NHS with advanced computational tools for direct patient and public benefit.
