Research

I am the statistician for the Manchester Children's Growth and Vascular Health Study with the Division of Cardiovascular and Endocrine Sciences. The aim of this project is to investigate the effects of childrens growth patterns on markers for cardiovascular disease in health Brithish born South Asian and European origin infants. This has lead to my involment in a similar study looking at the effect of maternal malarial status on babies born in Nigeria 'The Idadan Childhood Growth and Vascular Health Study'.

Methodological Knowledge

Teaching

I teach a two of the three core units on the online Masters in Public Health offered by the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. I run the Fundamentals of Epidemiology course in the first semester and the Biostatistics course in the second semester. I also sit on the dissertations committee and I am involved with various other day to day isues to enable the successful running of this unique course.

Biography

I currently teach Fundamentals of Epidemiology and Biostatistics on the Masters in Public Health within the Faculty of Human and Medical Sciences.

I graduated from Aberdeen University with an honours degree in Statistics in 1991 and obtained my masters degree in Medical Statistics from Leicester University in 1992. I began working for the NHS Information and Statistics Division in Edinburgh before moving to Glasgow University to work on a research project on seasonal patterns of morbidity and mortality. During my time at Glasgow I completed my PhD titled ‘Seasonal patterns of mortality and morbidity in Scotland: modeling time series of counts’ and I was involved in other research projects on heart failure and housing and health.

I moved to the University of Manchester in 2001 and was based at the National Drug Evidence Centre and the Evidence for Population Health Unit before moving to the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre in October 2006. During this time I have been involved in research on prevalence of problem drug use in Greater Manchester, the population impact of interventions for heart disease and the influence of infant growth on risk factors for CHD as well as several small scale research projects. I now focus much of time on teaching on the MPH.
