Role

Professor Jonathan Green is Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in the University of Manchester and Honorary Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s Hospitals University NHS Trust and Manchester Biomedical Research Centre.

He serves on the Editorial/Advisory Boards of the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Advances in Psychiatric Treatment and European Journal of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and is a member of the Commissioning Board for the NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme.  Other roles include - National Trials Adoptions Committee, UKCRN; Scientific Board, British Autism Study of Infant Siblings; CAMHS lead, NW Medicines for Children Research Network; Deputy Lead NW Mental Health Research Network.

Research

I am interested in the social development of children – and how problems in social development are central to many child mental health problems.

I lead the Social development and psychopathology research theme within Mental Health and Neurodegeneration research group.

We investigate a range of developmental social impairments in childhood and their clinical consequences. These include:

We have a focus on running clinical trials of theoretically driven interventions for these problems as well as wider problems in child mental health. The aim of these is both to identify useful clinical interventions for practice and also to use clinical trials as a way of investigating basic science questions.

Our clinical trials in autism include:

Biography

Jonathan Green did general medical training in Cambridge University and University College London; Paediatrics and Developmental Paediatrics at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children, Nuffield Hearing and Speech Centre and the Thomas Coram Research Centre in London; before specialising in Child Psychiatry in Oxford and then Manchester.

He has a long standing clinical and research interests in autism and other aspects of social development in children.

Clinically, he runs a regional specialist Social Development Clinic at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, which undertakes assessment and treatment innovation with ASD and a range of other impairments of social development in children. He co-led the UK’s first study into ICD Asperger Syndrome and has published on social and language development in ASD, co-morbidity and treatment intervention, as well as on Attachment Disorder and the social development consequences of early attachment failure.

Collaborators and affiliated staff

An important collaboration within the clinical trials work is with methodologists and bio-statisticians in the MRC funded Manchester trials methodology research group headed by Professor Graham Dunn. Within this group we study treatment process in trials, therapeutic alliance (including the PhD projects Antecedents of Therapeutic Alliance and Therapeutic alliance personality and treatment outcome in group therapy) and new ways of analysing causal inferences in trial results.

During our work we have developed a range of key instruments for both research and clinical use that are now widely used in the research and clinical communities. Amongst these:
