Research

Primary research interest area: perinatal health services.    As with other aspects of clinical practice, the way we deliver health service should be evidence-based. Unfortunately good-quality evidence is often lacking in this field. Health service research aims to find the best ways of translating the results of science and technology into real benefits for individuals and for the community.

The Perinatal Health Services Research Collaboration is a research team based at the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre, St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, but drawing its membership from a range of disciplines and institutions. We aim to develop a portfolio of research and innovation projects relating to the organisation and delivery of maternity services and to the psychology of maternal and fetal health. Our work includes research into the effectiveness of models of service delivery and the development and evaluation of interventions to improve the quality and safety of maternity services. We are interested in engagement of partners, antenatal education, psychosocial stress in pregnancy, team work, and patient safety. Our work is underpinned by the philosophy that midwifery and obstetric care should aim to achieve both good clinical and good psychological outcomes for the woman and baby.
