Role

Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases with an honorary Consultancy at the University Hospital of South Manchester

Memberships of Committees and Professional Bodies

Royal College of Pathologists, European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, International Society for Human and Animal Mycology, Association of Clinical Oral Microbiology, International Association for Dental Research, British Society for Medical Mycology, British Society for Oral Medicine, Finnish Dental Association, Finish Society for Hospital Hygiene, Finnish Society for Immunology, Finnish Society for the Research of Infectious Diseases

Research

My aim is to advance our understanding of the interplay between upper respiratory tract microbes and the host.
My main research interests include local and systemic infection complications of oral source, oral and upper respiratory tract infections in immunocompromised patients, host-microbe interactions, biofilms, antimicrobial susceptibility and treatment of respiratory tract pathogens, carcinogenicity of chronic mucosal infections, biomaterial infections and infection control. My group (8 PhD students and a post doctoral fellow) undertakes basic research (genomics, pathogenesis and mechanisms of antimicrobial drug resistance and carcinogenicity of microbial acetaldehyde production), applied laboratory work (models of pathogenesis, molecular diagnostics, antifungal resistance testing, pharmacodynamics of new antimicrobials), and clinical studies (tissue response to chronic oral infection and acetaldehyde exposure).

Teaching

I have taught Clinical Microbiology and Immunology since 1997 first as a Clinical Assistant and more recently as a Senior Lecturer. I have trained registrars in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases from the Departments of Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Clinical Dentistry, Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Otorhinolaryngology and Clinical Microbiology since 2005. I was nominated the lecturer of the year (Oral medicine) and the CME trainer of the year (Finnish Dental Association) in 2008. I am also active in post graduate research supervision and have 8 PhD students.

Biography

I started as a Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases with an honorary Consultancy at the University Hospital of South Manchester in July 2009. Prior to these positions I was the Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Oral Medicine, Oral Microbiology and Infectious diseases at the University of Helsinki and the University Hospital of Helsinki, Finland. I completed my PhD on innate mucosal immunology in 2001 after which I completed a specialist training program in Medical Microbiology.

I am a clinician with expertise in oral disease and health and in infectious diseases. I described a novel immune evasion mechanism for gram negative bacteria in 2001 and I was first to publish that one of the major pathogens in chronic periodontitis, Porphyromonas gingivalis can cause an intracellular infection in the oral epithelia. I was also the first to describe the carcinogenicity of chronic oral candidal infection in APECED patients and that the production of carcinogenic acetaldehyde from dietary sugars and alcohol could partially explain this (Int J Cancer 2009, 2011). I have published a number of papers on the development of antifungal resistance in Candida albicans in APECED patients (JAC 2007, 2010). In addition, I have produced systematic data on severe odontogenic infections and their risk factors (J Infect 2008). To date I have published a total of 60 peer-reviewed articles and books or book chapters in the field of microbiology, mucosal immunology, infectious diseases and oral medicine. I am also an awarded teacher with a diploma in University education and I was recently awarded a diploma in infection control.
