Research

Psychosis and schizophrenia usually start in early adult life and affect more than one in 100 people in the UK. It is a strange and mostly devastating disorder from which 80% will never recover. The first susceptibility genes for psychosis have now been identified and the environmental factors which trigger full psychosis in predisposed individuals increasingly appear to include psychosocial factors.

Shôn’s research has focussed on early psychosis as potentially the most important context in which to clarify mechanisms of progression, and to test new treatments. With Professors Nick Tarrier and Richard Bentall, it was shown for the first time that a specific psychologicial intervention (cognitive therapy), when added to drug treatment, could accelerate recovery and improve clinical outcome. With a focus even earlier in the disorder, with Dr Tony Morrison, it has been shown that intervention for prodromal symptoms can reduce the risk of first episode psychosis in at risk individuals. Earlier still, it has been shown that solitary subclinical symptoms can be picked up in the general population.

Shôn and colleagues have shown for the first time that the internet can be used to identify such individuals and, using functional brain imaging, the location in the cortex for these pre-prodromal symptoms has been established.

In 2004, Shôn, with colleagues Iain Buchan, Carole Goble and others, were awarded a £2.2m strategic grant from the MRC to deploy e-science methods to collect data on people presenting with first episode psychosis to the services included in the UK Mental health Research Network.

Biography

Shôn Lewis has been Professor of Adult Psychiatry at The University of Manchester since 1994. He trained clinically at the Maudsley Hospital and began his research career at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, with Robin Murray, on neurodevelopmental factors in schizophrenia.

He was Head of the School of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences in Manchester 1998-2002, chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ research committee 1996-2001, council member of the British Association of Psychopharmacology 1999-2002, established the European First Episode Psychosis Network in 1996 and was board member of the International Early Psychosis Association 2000-2005. He was a member of the Wellcome Trust Neurosciences and Mental Health Panel 1998-2001 and has been a member of the Medical Research Council Neurosciences and Mental Health Board and the Cross-board Clinical Trials group since 2005.

He is joint Director of the Stanley Medical Institute International Research Centre (Manchester), R&D Director of Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust and Associate Director of the UK Mental Health Research Network.

Shôn's research interests focus on risk factors and interventions in early psychosis. He is chief investigator on the MRC clinical e-science grant in early psychosis (PsyGrid).

He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2007.
