Advice to applicants

Applicants are required to provide all the information requested in the appropriate section of the UCAS form. In particular, results of all previous academic exams including those that have been completed and certificated, must be provided. We reserve the right to withdraw offers from applicants who are found to have withheld information about completed qualifications.

If applicants have previously applied to the Manchester Medical School, they must give the relevant UCAS number so the old UCAS form can be re-examined.

Late applications and clearing

The School does not consider late applications after the official closing date. The School does not enter UCAS Extra or Clearing.

Mitigating circumstances

The Manchester Medical School strongly recommends that any mitigating circumstances that may affect not only academic performance but also any aspect of the information contained in the UCAS form, should be included in the referees' report, or brought to our attention separately at the time of application.

These may be personal or family illness, other family circumstances, change of teachers during a course, problems with school facilities. We cannot take into account information that is supplied after an adverse decision has been made by the School.

Returning to education

Graduates

Applications from graduates are welcome for both the A106 and A104 courses. Undergraduates should be in their final years. All should have achieved or be predicted at least a 2:1 degree. The GCSE and A2-level results of those who have moved straight from school to university are taken into account; at least 4 GCSE at A Grade and BBB minimum at A2 is expected. Please see essential requirements for English and Mathematics. If there was a gap between leaving school and starting university, applicants must contact the Admissions Office by letter before completing the UCAS form.

The School does not offer a fast track course for graduates but accepts students on to year 3 of the five year course from:

  • St Andrews University, Scotland: Around 90 graduates annually from the 3 year Bachelor of Medical Sciences Honours degree. Application is via St Andrews University
  • International Medical University, Malaysia: Approximately 13 graduates annually from the 2.5 year Phase 1 programme in Medical Sciences. Application is via the International Medical university

Non-traditional Applicants

We are pleased to receive applications from non-traditional applicants who are taking either A Levels or an Access to Medicine course. We do not accept Access to Medicine courses as a substitute for those with poor A Levels or a poor degree. We accept Access to Medicine courses from the College of West Anglia, The Manchester College and Sussex Downs College.

Dental graduates

The School offers two places for dental graduates with FDS, MFDs or MDF who are planning a career in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and have full registration with the General Dental Council. Application is via UCAS for A106 point of entry 3. UKCAT and English Language requirements apply.

Aptitude test requirement

United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT)

Applicants are required to sit the United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT). Please note that the result is valid for one application cycle only. If applicants are reapplying, they must resit UKCAT.

See the UKCAT website for further details and exemptions.

Fitness to practice / health requirements

Health screening

Successful applicants will be required to comply with any viral screening as requested by the Department of Health. Screening will be undertaken by the Student Occupational Health Service. General enquiries about health screening should be addressed to Elizabeth Aniteye, Student Occupational Health Nurse Adviser, Tel +44 (0)161 275 2862, Fax +44 (0)161 275 3137, Email elizabeth.aniteye@manchester.ac.uk

Criminal Records Bureau check

Successful applicants will be required, as part of the non-academic conditions of their offer, to provide a satisfactory criminal record check. In the UK this takes the form of an Enhanced Level search by the Criminal Records Bureau [CRB].

Regulations and record systems in other countries vary. Overseas applicants are encouraged to contact our admissions team. Anyone who considers it possible that a CRB or other disclosure may reveal any offence must write to the Admissions Coordinator for Undergraduate Medical Admissions with full details before applying.

Deferrals

The School welcomes applications from students who wish to defer entry to the following year and encourages candidates to use their gap year imaginatively.

Policy for applicants who resit their qualifications

The School does not consider any applications from students who are re-sitting their A2 subjects.

Re-applications

If you have applied to us before, any subsequent application should provide updated information on your suitability for the course. We reserve the right to draw on any information from previous applications.

Transfers

Due to the highly integrated structure of the degree course, the School does not grant exemptions from subjects. Transfers from other courses are not considered. Students who feel that they have embarked on the wrong course elsewhere, and who wish to be considered for entry to Manchester Medical School, should withdraw from that course before submitting an application.

The School do not consider applications from students who have started a medical course elsewhere.
